The lagoon of Thau is the most important center for the production of cultured shellfish in the South of France. At regular intervals during the Summer, a distrophic crisis happens , locally called "malaïgue"; it can destroy a more or less important part of the livestock . Different ways of reducing this risk have been considered, one of them being the removal of the bottom mud under the rearing structures which is the object of the present study undertaken under IFREMER ' s initiative in Sète. Four experimental sites were observed after the intervention of different types of mechanical appliance used for the removal of a layer of mud. The parameters studied concerned sediment, water and cultured shell- fish, in order to compare the results under... |

Galeoides decadactylis is a commercially important species of the family polynemidae and constituted 10-20% by weight of the total landing of the trawl fishery in the 60s (Longhurst 1964a). Between 1971 and 1985 landing figures of the fish showed a fall of 7 – 8% by weight of total fish landed (FDF and NIOMR. 1986). Length frequency distribution showed the average size of fish landed by the commercial fishing company was 23.03cm while that of the Institute’s Research vessel was 18.89cm. Catch curve analysis showed that the fully exploited length ranged between 17 and 31cm. The length at infinity (Lx) obtained was 47.75cm while the growth coefficient (Z) was 0.20. Estimated total mortality (z) was 0.36. The stock size estimates was 10,090.54 tonnes,... |

A review of lipid requirements of shrimp and other crustacean species, when applicable, is presented. Qualitative requirements of crustaceans for cholesterol, fatty acids and phospholipids have been documented, but quantitative requirements generally remain undefined. Potential interrelationships between different classes of lipids that may influence requirements as well as differences due to age and species need to be investigated. A more accurate definition of lipid requirements can be achieved by supporting traditional evaluations based upon weight gain and survival with biochemical or histological evidence. |

The adjustment of Calomys callosus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) to intermittent food deprivation was investigated. Animals subjected either to 24-hr or to 48-hr repeated periods of deprivation successfully compensated, showing (1) increases in post-fast intake relatively to the intake by control animals; (2) rapid recovery of the baseline levels of body wieght. The regulatory ability of C. callosus is comparable, in such respects, to the ability of the common rat and some other rodents but it is remarkably different from the hamster's. |

Fruits and vegetables have been identified as potential production alternatives to use available farm resources. Several "market window" studies have been undertaken to evaluate such feasibility. These state and regional studies are analyzed and compared to identify underlying assumptions and methodologies. Recommendations of the studies are evaluated on an aggregate basis and limitations of the market window technique are identified and discussed. The technique was judged to be useful in planning because it involves consideration of potential costs to be incurred, markets to be evaluated, and price expectations for the various commodities considered. |
